Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Chris Myers

Wildcats Lead Majority of Game, Tigers Finish with Strong Final 11 Minutes for Win

SAVANNAH, Ga. – It looked good for the Wildcats over the first 28 minutes, but the momentum swung greatly against them from there. Fort Valley State led the majority of the night, but a Savannah State 17-2 run to end the third quarter and five minutes into the fourth took it for the 81-59 women's basketball victory.

Torri Myers two times in the second quarter gave FVSU (3-5) solid leads of 24-13 and 33-24 pair of free throws. Following a Diamond Jones jumper gave the visitors back the lead, 47-46, with 2:18 in the third, Savannah State took over. The Tigers netted the next six points and 21 of the next 25 tallies over the ensuing 6:52 to reverse the momentum and a 70-51 lead.

Jones recorded 17 points to lead the Wildcats, including a trio of 3-pointers. Myers hit 5-of-8 attempts for 16 points to go with seven rebounds and two steals. Nikki Culbreath was the third double-digit scorer with 11 points with a pair of treys and four assists. Jah'ne Brown grabbed 11 boards and chipped in seven points.

Azhana Maxwell pumped in 27 points to lead all players for Savannah State. Le'Andrea Gillis drained six 3-pointers for her 18 points.

The Tigers controlled the inside with a 62-44 rebound advantage and 40 of its 81 points inside.

Trailing 13-12, FVSU connected for the final 10 points of the first quarter with Myers having two buckets around treys from Jones and Culbreath for a 22-13 lead. Myers added her first of two second-quarter free throws for the Wildcats' largest lead of the night at 24-13 at 9:26.

FVSU completes its six-game home schedule with a 5:30 p.m. contest against Tuskegee University on Wednesday night, Feb. 24.
