Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Chris Myers

Wildcats Eight-Point Push in Final Minute Plus Propels Past Yellow Jackets

COLUMBIA, S.C. – In a Friday contest they led most of the night, the Wildcats needed the last final push for the victory. Down by two points with 1:20 left, Fort Valley State ran off the next eight points in less than a minute to seal the 82-74 women's basketball win over Allen University.

FVSU (4-5) started its key spurt with a Diamond Jones 3-point play and another layup, before Nyah Dismukes swiped the ball and laid in her own bucket. Nikki Culbreath added 1-of-2 foul shots as the visitors hit 5 of 6 free throws in the final 28 seconds.

Jones recorded top Wildcats honors with 20 points on 6-for-11 shooting with one trey. Jah'ne Brown drained a pair of triples as part of her 19-point effort and six rebounds. Torri Myers dropped in 7-of-12 tries for 17 points and grabbed five caroms, while Kyla McIntosh had a season-best 12 points and six rebounds. Culbreath chipped in seven points and five assists.

Kyla Reid powered Allen with 25 points and 15 rebounds on the night.

Back-to-back Culbreath layups gave FVSU an early 9-4 advantage, but Allen (4-9) took a slight 17-16 lead in the final first-period moments.

The Wildcats were down 26-23 midway through the second when a Ja'Nya Ferguson downed a 3-pointer to start seven points in a row. After leading 39-33 at half, the visitors pushed it to double digits when McIntosh hit from beyond the arc, 47-37, at 5:51.

Trailing 65-64 with 5:04 left, the Yellow Jackets netted the next six points for their largest lead of 70-65. The Wildcats answered with the next five points compliments of Myers for a tie at 70. Allen edged back in front 72-70, before the Jones 3-point play gave FVSU the lead for good.

FVSU will complete its 2021 regular season with back-to-back road games next Tuesday and Wednesday, March 2 and 3, at Albany State. Both games tip at 5:30 p.m.
