Wildcats Have Tough Fielding Opening Day, Fall to Wolves

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – For the first time in 352 calendar days, the Wildcats took the diamond. Fort Valley State suffered a tough fielding opening day as Wesleyan College, took advantage for 6-1 and 12-3 softball wins.

Kayla Phillips lined a hit to left field to plate a FVSU (0-2) run in the third to make a 5-1 game, but it could not cut further into the Wesleyan (2-6) lead over the final four frames. A Ladayshia Williams slice down the left field line, which skipped past the Wolves fielder, scored both Phillips, who singled, and herself to tie game two at 3-3. Wesleyan broke the tie in the top of the fifth and added eight more runs over the final two innings.

Phillips paced the FVSU hitters with a 3-for-6 day with two runs, a double, and a stolen base Williams added two others home hits with a pair of RBI, while Kateria Loney went 2-for-4 in the late contest. Tailor Gilyard and Makayla Cruz had one single each.

Caprice Johnson had five solid first-game innings where she allowed eight hits, but no earned runs.

The visiting Wolves took advantage of 12 Wildcats errors in the 12 innings and plated nine of their 18 runs via the unearned variety.

Right now, FVSU is off until it starts a four-game series at Clark Atlanta on March 12 starting at 1 p.m.
