Wildcats Race to Lead, Earn Victory over Rams

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – For the first time in 11 months and two days, the Wildcats were on the basketball court in live action. Fort Valley State raced out to a strong first half and earned the season-opening victory over rival Albany State, 76-62, on Friday evening.

A Nikki Culbreath trey with 5:19 showing in the first quarter pushed the Wildcats (1-0) ahead, 7-6, and the home team led the last 34:21 of the contest. After leading by 17 points at half, FVSU opened the third quarter with nine of the first 10 point for a commanding, 51-26, and held ASU to no closer than eight points early in the final frame.

Juniors Jah'ne Brown and Torri Myers each pumped in 14 points to lead the winning effort on a combined 12 of 19 from the floor to go with 11 rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots. Newcomer Kyla McIntosh added 11 points and three steals, while Culbreath dropped a pair of triples as part of her 10 points.
