Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Chris Myers

Wildcats Drop Buckets When Needed, Take Second from Rams

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – In a vastly different game from a day ago, the Wildcats claimed their second victory of the shortened 2021 campaign on Saturday. Fort Valley State had the answer by dropping the buckets when it needed and held off Albany State, 64-60, in women's basketball.

After the Golden Rams (0-4) cut the margin to a single point in the final moments of the third quarter, the Wildcats (2-0) received a Diamond Jones trey to start the final period scoring and never lost the lead. Following a visitors' basket to make it a two-point margin on the next possession, FVSU went on the most important run of 14-2 over the next 3:45 for the 14-point cushion, 58-44, with 5:27 left. ASU was unable to get any closer than the final four-point difference after a pair of foul shots with eight seconds.

Jah'ne Brown led four double-figure FVSU scorers with 13 points to go with a team-best nine rebounds. Jones added three triples as part of her 12 points to go with four assists and four steals. Torri Myers added 11 points and nine boards, while Nikki Culbreath made 4-of-8 attempts with a pair of treys for 10 points and five assists.

Faith Fantroy chipped in six points and four rebounds off the bench. FVSU won the board battle, 41-34, and forced 24 ASU turnovers.

Center Edith Gordon paced the Rams with 15 points on 5-of-7 from the floor.

For the second night in a row, ASU put the first points on the board and held leads of 2-0 and 4-2 in the opening 3:09. The Wildcats did not take the lead for good until a Brown layup from Culbreath inside to make it 11-10 at 3:01 left in the first frame. FVSU led by as many as 12 points after a Kyla McIntosh 3-pointer late in the second quarter, before a 32-22 intermission score.

FVSU goes on the road for the first time on Wednesday night, Feb. 10, contest at Miles College. Tip is set for 6 p.m. EST.
