Pesky Wildcats Give Blazers Tough Time in Exhibition

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Moving up in competition to help out their foe, the Wildcats held their own on Friday afternoon. Fort Valley State saw a tie score three times in the second quarter and battled hard until NCAA DI University of Alabama at Birmingham finally pulled away in the final moments of the third period and 78-45 final.

After cutting the margin back to four points by the end of the first period, FVSU's Nikki Culbreath right away pumped in a triple for a one-point game, 18-17, 30 seconds in the second 10 minutes. Buckets by Torri Myers, Amiya Allen and Diamond Jones tied the game three times in the second – 20-20, 22-22 and 25-25 – before the host took a 36-28 intermission advantage. A Faith Fantroy 3-point play kept the FVSU deficit down to eight points, 46-38, 6:57 into the third frame, before UAB netted the final eight points of the quarter.

Behind three 3-pointers, Jones led all Wildcats scorers with 16 points. Myers added six points, six rebounds and five steals. Culbreath chipped in five points.

Caitlynn Daniels led four UAB double-digit players with 16 points.

FVSU wraps up its 2021 season with an exhibition at home against Benedict College on Saturday afternoon, March 6. Tip is set for 2 p.m.
