Wildcats Sink Flying Fleet, Take Second Spring Game

GREENWOOD, S.C. – In a cool and rainy afternoon, the Wildcats used the same formula of scoring early to success. Fort Valley State scored the game's opening 17 points and then it added three scores in only 2:30 after a weather delay in the early moments of the third quarter to pull away from host Erskine College on the way to the 45-21 Saturday football final.

After an Andre LaBat 45-yard field goal on its opening possession, FVSU (2-0) saw Tyrell Jackson find Shemar Bridges from 53 yards for the game's first touchdown, before Tajee' Steele ran a 13-yard reverse for the second score and a 17-0 lead 19:15 into the game. It was Kentrelle Williams running which sealed the game for the Wildcats as he rushed in from four and seven yards within 40 seconds of each other compliments of a Zach Anderson forced fumble on the Flying Fleet's second play for a quick 31-7 cushion. Marlon Fleming added a third FVSU touchdown in the 2:30 time period on a 34-yard tip-toe down the sideline.

Erksine added two scores in the final 22 minutes around an Erron Price 34-yard reception as the final FVSU touchdown and 45-21 final.

For the first time in recent seasons, the FVSU offense recorded more yards on the ground of 299 than it did through the air (204). The Wildcats outgained the Flying Fleet, 503-291, in the game.

Offensively, Williams rumbled for 142 yards on 22 carries with his two touchdowns and a 6.5-yard average. Fleming accounted for 80 yards on 10 rushes and Mike Oldfield posted 42 yards on seven totes.

Bridges grabbed six passes from Jackson covering 143 yards and the 53-yard score. At quarterback, Jackson completed 11-of-23 passes for 204 yards and two touchdowns.

Defensively, FVSU forced four turnovers and three sacks. Deon Andrews paced the Wildcats with nine tackles and Antonio Golden registered six stops, two for losses. Keon Brogan and D.J. Cone, who had five tackles, picked off passes, while Tyson Latimore, Nathaniel Freeney and Kris Daniels had sacks.

FVSU wrapped up its short 2021 spring season with a perfect 2-0 mark for first-year head coach Maurice Flowers.
