The 2021 Wildcats football season countdown hit another marker closer to the beginning of the season Thursday morning. The Fort Valley State football team was voted third in the East Division and six Wildcats were selected to the Preseason All-Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference teams during the annual 2021 SIAC Football Media Day.

"We are very excited and we have a lot of work to do (for the 2021 season)," said FVSU head coach Maurice Flowers. "We have been preparing for a while and being able to play two games in the spring helped us prepare more for this season and the opening game against Tuskegee (in the Red Tails Classic on Sept. 5 in Montgomery, Ala.). The games we played in the spring were invaluable for us."

Flowers and the Wildcats were voted by the SIAC coaches third in the preseason, the same position it last finished in the 2019 campaign. FVSU posted a 6-4 overall mark and it went 4-2 in the SIAC East two falls ago. Flowers team will have an uphill battle against both defending SIAC East champion Albany State, which was picked second, and preseason favorite Savannah State. Rounding out the East Division were Morehouse College, Benedict, Clark Atlanta, Edward Waters and Allen. Miles College is slated to repeat as SIAC West champs and it is followed by Tuskegee, Kentucky State, Central State and Lane College.

"We have a great mix of experience on our team with seniors are ready to go. It will be a player-led team with the seniors providing our leadership," added Flowers. "We are ready to compete for a championship and NCAA Division playoff run. Our young men expect nothing less and it is what they are wanting. We don't shy away from talking about what we want to accomplish daily."

The Wildcats head into the August training camp with the student-athletes reporting next Tuesday, August 3, with six All-SIAC Preseason Team members. Leading the charge, seniors defensive end Jahseari Patterson and defensive back Zach Anderson on defense and center Emmanuel Boone for the offense on the First Team. Wide receiver Shemar Bridges, offensive lineman Waylin Bell and defensive back Michael Hicks, Jr. garnered All-Second Team status.
