Wildcats Play Tough, but Rattlers Third Quarter Proves Too Much

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – In stepping up a level of competition, the underdog Wildcats played tough on Saturday night. Florida A&M, though, drove the opening third-quarter drive 74 yards and sacked the Fort Valley State quarterback and returned the fumble from it 45 yards for touchdowns and proved too much in a 34-7 gridiron final score.

Trailing 7-0 on the first possession of the second quarter, the Wildcats (1-1) put together their best drive of the night. Taking over on its 23-yardline to start, FVSU used punter Trayontae Williams to run a fake punt for 10 yards and a first down from their own 39-yardline. Three players later, Tyrell Jackson found Shemar Bridges for a 35-yard hookup, before Undre Williams caught a 16-yard pass for the touchdown out of the backfield to tie the contest, 7-7, with 10:17 in the second.

Two possessions later in the second, Jackson connected with Erron Price over the deep middle for a 24-yard touchdown only to have it called back on a holding call to prevent FVSU of its only lead of the evening. Instead, the Wildcats turned the ball over on downs four plays later and the score remained 7-7 at the half.

As was the case out of the half a week ago for FVSU, FAMU (1-1) turned a tie contest into a two-score advantage in the opening seven minutes of the third quarter. The Rattlers took eight plays to cover 74 yards with a 32-yard pass capping the drive to go ahead, 14-7. The FAMU defense turned a third-and-nine play into a 45-yard fumble return for another touchdown off a sack to separate the two teams at 21-7.

FAMU almost doubled the FVSU total offense on the night, 400-244. The Wildcats passed for 209 yards, but managed only 35 yards on the ground.

Jackson completed 20 of 38 pass attempts for 201 yards and the 16-yard touchdown. Price pulled in six of those passes for 72 yards, while Bridges accounted for 59 yards on five grabs. Undre Williams had two receptions for 25 yards and the score with Tajee Steele (3 for 22) and Shaw Robinson (4 for 16) getting in the line. Marlon Fleming led the ground attack with three carries and 20 yards.

For the FVSU defense, newcomer Jaylen Brown led the unit with nine tackles, a tackle for loss, and a pass breakup. Mike Hicks, Jr. and Tim Alderson added six and five stops. Antonio Golden posted one sack, two tackles for loss and five tackles.

Zaquan Baldwin recorded the other FVSU sack to go with four tackles. Christian Maddox and Tyler Moore picked off Rattler passes.
FVSU will make its home debut next weekend in a 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 18, contest against Lane College. The Dragons posted their first win of the season with a 35-26 victory at Clark Atlanta.
