FVSU Furious Late-Comeback Charge Runs Out of Time Against Spring Hil

MOBILE, Ala. – The Wildcats ran out of time in a late Tuesday night men's basketball affair. Trailing by nine points with 18 seconds left, Fort Valley State almost pulled off a furious late-comeback charge as a final potential game-tying 3-point attempt fell off the rim to seal host Spring Hill College's 76-73 win.

Following a pair of free throws with 18 seconds, the Badgers (2-13/1-7 SIAC West) held a 74-65 advantage. FVSU (2-12/2-5 SIAC East) went into overdrive as Pierre Mitchell drained a trey two ticks latter, which Tyler Pendergrass stole the ensuing home possession and turned it into a 3-point play for a 74-70 margin with seven seconds. Spring Hill turned the ball over again and Mitchell made them pay with a second triple, 74-73, with five seconds. After a Wildcats foul, the Badgers made both free throws for a 76-73 lead, before JaMarcus Scott's potential game-tying 3-pointer was off the mark to end the game.

Mitchell and Ty'Reek Johnson finished with a FVSU-best 13 points apiece. Johnson made 5 of 10 shots to go with four rebounds, three assists and two steals, while Mitchell dished six assists. Joe Williams recorded his best game of the year with 12 points on 5 of 6 shooting, five rebounds and three steals. K.J. Doucet added 11 points and four boards, while Scott recorded 10 points.

In their comeback second half, FVSU connected on 17 of 34 attempts, but it was Spring Hill's hot shooting all night of 24 of 47 field goals, including 10 of 21 from 3-point range to make the difference.

David Daniels paced the home team with 17 points.

FVSU will try to reverse its fortunes by hosting Albany State on Saturday night, Jan. 22, in an 8 p.m. clash.
