Wildcats Sweep Past Tigers, Record Men’s Volleyball Program First Victory

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – It was a good night to be a Wildcat in HPE Arena. In the inaugural home match, Fort Valley State swept past Benedict College, 3-0, to record not only the men's volleyball program's first victory, but also the first Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference league matchup.

FVSU (1-1) raced out to an early 8-1 lead in the opening set and never looked back playing its first time on the home court. The Wildcats claimed the straight-set match by scores of 25-15, 25-20 and 25-18.

Oshane Farquharson led the FVSU effort with 11 kills, hit .368 and added two blocks. Jamil Scott pounded eight winners and dug four attacks, while Jaxson Hicks lined six kills, four aces and three blocks. Justin Yates handed out 26 set assists to go with five digs and three blocks. Jae Henderson dug a team-high eight digs.

After leading 8-1 early in the first set, Benedict (0-1) came back to within four, 10-6. FVSU doubled up the visitors, 8-4, in the next dozen points before taking the set, 25-15. The set win was the first FVSU set win in the program history.

The Tigers led early in set two, 7-3, before the Wildcats rallied right back to tie, 9-9. Down 16-13, FVSU outscored Benedict, 12-4, down the stretch to go ahead by two sets.

FVSU, again, ran out to an early 10-2 advantage in the third set. The Wildcats cruised from there to complete their first win, 25-18.

FVSU can enjoy its first win for a week, before it plays in a tri-match next Saturday, Jan. 29, at Reinhardt University.
