Wildcats Push Hard Before Falling to Defending SSC Champion Tampa

Tampa, Fla. – After missing the opening weekend due to weather, the Wildcats laced them up Wednesday night against one of the NCAA Division II South Region's best teams. Fort Valley State pushed the defending Sunshine State Conference champion University of Tampa before the home team pulled away, 71-33, in women's basketball.

The Wildcats (0-1) enjoyed an 8-4 in the opening five minutes and only trailed by six points in the waning seconds of the opening quarter. FVSU netted the second frame's opening two buckets by Amiya Allen and Ja'Nya Ferguson to cut the margin to 25-20. The Spartans (3-0) netted the next nine points and took a 39-26 intermission lead, before they opened the second half by scoring seven of the first nine points and never looked back.

Diamond Jones paced the FVSU attack with 13 points to go with four rebounds, three assists and three steals. Torri Myers added eight points and 11 boards. Allen chipped in six points and three caroms, and newcomer Shekinah Rachel contributed five points and seven rebounds. Ferguson had five points.

Tampa was led by Sydney Lin's 17 points and seven rebounds.

FVSU goes back on the road this weekend for a Saturday, Nov. 19, 4:30 p.m. ET contest at Miles College.
