Samb Leads Second Half Effort, Wildcats Take Lions Down Stretch

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – Coming home for the first time, the Wildcats proved it was a good elixir for success. After trailing by five in the first half, newcomer Khadim Samb led a Fort Valley State second-half charge and defeated Paine College, 59-51, in men's basketball Friday night.

Down 36-30, Samb drained a top-of-the key triple to push FVSU (1-3) ahead and added a pair of free throws for a 39-36 lead 5:29 into the second 20 minutes. The Lions roared back for a slim 42-41 edge before a Joe Williams putback, and a Samb bucket, before Williams fired a defensive rebound the length of the floor to a streaking K.J. Doucet for a dunk and 47-42 home lead at 5:59 the Wildcats would not give up. Paine College (2-3) netted the next two baskets to make it a one-point contest, but it could get no closer as a Williams flush sealed the home victory with 2:01 remaining at 53-48.

Having four points and four rebounds at half, Samb recorded his first double-double as a Wildcat with 11 tallies and eight boards in the later stanza. The junior transfer hit 5 of 10 shots and all four of his free throws for 15-point and 12-rebound totals.

Doucet netted nine of his 11 points in the first half and added 11 rebounds and three assists. Myson Lowe chipped in 10 points with a pair of 3-pointers and three assists. Williams, who grabbed six rebounds, and Quincy Young both connected for six points. JaMarcus Scott had six rebounds and three points.

After having a tough time at the charity stripe in the first few games, FVSU sank 12 of its 13 attempts and outrebounded Paine, 52-46.

The Lions were led by Nate Adams' 21 points with 19 of his points coming in the first half to go with 12 rebounds.

FVSU has a couple days off until it travels to face North Georgia on Tuesday night, Nov. 22, at 7:30 p.m.
