Myers and Jones Voted All-SIAC Preseason, Wildcats Predicted 6th in East

11/2/2022 3:08:00 PM

ATLANTA, Ga. – The Wildcats hard-court countdown clicked down one more day today. Torri Myers and D.J. Jones highlighted the Fort Valley State effort as All-Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Preseason Women's Basketball selections, while the team was predicted sixth in the East Division.

After making noise in the SIAC Tournament with a run to the Quarterfinals, FVSU (9-15) looks to build upon the quality finish for the 2022-23 campaign.

Under the direction of new Head Coach Doug Robertson, Myers and Jones provide two foundation Wildcats this season as All-SIAC Preseason Second Team honorees.

In the Preseason rankings, FVSU was picked in sixth of the seven-team SIAC East heading into the year. The SIAC Tournament Championship game teams of Benedict College and Savannah State are slated to again be the top pair of programs. Albany State, Clark Atlanta and Edward Waters are third, fourth and fifth, while Allen University is seventh.

A graduate student, Myers returns for her final season of eligibility to again aid FVSU's inside game. Last season, the Buena Vista, Ga., native averaged 15.5 points, 7.1 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per contest. She ranked in four SIAC categories, including fifth in blocks (1.4 bpg), sixth in scoring (15.5 ppg), 10th in field goal percentage (.453) and 12th in rebounding (7.1 rpg). In 21 games, Myers scored double digits in points for 22 of 24 games and posted four double-doubles with 28 points and 14 rebounds to go with four steals, two blocks and two assists against Miles College. The senior also had an outstanding SIAC Tournament where she combined for 47 points and 16 rebounds in two games with 27 points and seven caroms versus Savannah State. Myers heads into her final season needing only 81 points to become the next FVSU 1,000-point scorer  to go with 557 rebounds, 103 steals, 95 blocks and 60 assists over 85 games of action.

Jones begins her third year at The Valley. The 5-4 point guard recorded stats of 12.9 points, 3.6 assists, 3.4 rebounds, 1.4 steals and 20 3-point field goals made. The Evergreen, Ala., product ranked sixth in the league at 3.6 assists per night, while she was 12th in assist to turnover ratio (0.8) and 14th in scoring. Diamond had her best game of last season at Savannah State with 29 points, nine rebounds and three assists. She also netted 24 points and six rebounds against Clark Atlanta and 23 points and five assists at Benedict. Over 29 career games for the Wildcats, Jones has 403 points (13.9 pp), 92 assists (3.2 apg), 86 rebounds and 56 steals.

Heading into the 2022-23 season, Tuskegee University can boast of both the Preseason Player of the Year, Ashiala Jackson, and Defensive Player of the Year, JuToreyia Willis. The pair are a big part of the reason Tuskegee is picked to win the SIAC West as a team.

The Wildcats has another week of practice before it begins the season on the road in Florida. FVSU tips in back-to-back games, Nov. 11 and 12, at Florida Tech in Melbourne, Fla., in 2 p.m. contests.
