Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Chris Myers

Wildcats Hold Advantage Good Part of Day, SIAC West Best Golden Tigers Prevail Late

TUSKEGEE, Ala. – The Wildcats are playing tough with some of the region's best in the early season. After leading for a good part of the first half, Fort Valley State faltered in a key three-minute stretch midway through the fourth quarter as Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference West Division favorite Tuskegee University ran off nine-straight points and went on for the 74-63 women's basketball Saturday afternoon win.

Taking a 36-35 edge to the half, FVSU (0-3) saw Amiya Allen net the third frame's opening two buckets for a 40-35 advantage 1:28 in. The Golden Tigers (4-1) answered with the next seven points and held a slim 51-47 edge heading to the final 10 minutes. Following a Diamond Jones free throw to pull the Wildcats back to within four, 55-51, at 7:27 left. Tuskegee, though, answered with the ensuing nine points to separate from its visitors over the next 2:30 to go on for the win.

Shekinah Rachel powered FVSU with 18 points on 8 of 12 shooting to go with nine rebounds. Jones added 12 points, nine assists, four rebounds and three steals. Torri Myers made 5 of 10 shots for 10 points, while Allen contributed eight points, six boards and two assists. Ja'Meisha Williams downed a couple 3-pointers for six points and Starr Brown also had six tallies.

Brittney Bolin led all scorers with 22 points, including five 3-pointers, for Tuskegee.

After netting the game's first points, the Wildcats scored a trio of buckets in the final 44 seconds of the opening quarter. On the final of the three baskets, Myers stole the ball and gave it to Jones for the short jumper and 18-16 lead.

Tied at 18 in the early second period, Rachel scored eight-straight FVSU points to help her team to a 26-20 lead at 7:05. The Wildcats, again, finished the quarter strong with jumpers by Myers and Rachel for a 36-35 intermission score.

FVSU remains on the road where it plays at Spring Hill College on Monday night, Nov. 28, in a 6:30 p.m. ET contest.
