Wildcats Strong 4th Quarter Seals Win over Badgers, Robertson Records First FVSU Victory

MOBILE, Ala. – The Wildcats have worked and worked to their success Monday night. Powered by Torri Myers opening three buckets and eight points in the frame, Fort Valley State turned a five-point deficit into a five-point lead in four minutes and went on for the 57-48 women's basketball victory over host Spring Hill College.

After Myers three baskets in the first 3:07 of the final period, FVSU recaptured the lead, 41-40. The team exchanged buckets and the Badgers (1-6/0-2 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference West) held a 44-43 edge. Diamond Jones pumped in a pair of jump shots with Myers adding her fourth of the frame between them for a 49-44 FVSU advantage with3:51 remaining. Spring Hill was unable to get any closer than four points in the final three minutes before Jones sealed it with two free throws in the final seconds.

With the victory, FVSU first-year head coach Doug Robertson records his first Wildcat win. On the early season, the Wildcats improved to 1-3 and now 1-1 in the SIAC East.

In a balanced effort, Robertson saw four of his players hit for double figures with Jones leading the way at 13 points to go with seven assists and six steals. Myers made 5 of 10 attempts for 12 points, eight in the fourth quarter, and seven boards. Amiya Allen connected for 11 points and four steals. Ja'Meisha Williams hit a trio of 3-pointers as part of her 11 points. Shekinah Rachel pulled down eight rebounds.

Yolanda Nelson led Spring Hill with 16 points.

Williams opened the night with her first trey and Allen added a layup for an early 5-0. Spring Hill edged ahead, 10-8, momentarily only to see Kyndall Thomas and Jones finish the first 10 minutes with buckets for a 13-10 lead.

Ja'Nya Ferguson pushed the Wildcats lead to six, 16-10, in the first 34 seconds of period number two. Holding a 19-17 lead, Williams buried another trey to start a seven-point FVSU burst to make it a nine-point, 26-17, margin and her third triple made it 29-20 a minute later. The Badgers finished the half with the final six tallies to make it 29-26 at intermission.

With FVSU leading 35-31 late in the third quarter, Spring Hill ran off the final nine points and took a 40-35 lead into the final quarter.
