Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Chris Myers

Ga. Southwestern Pulls Away from FVSU in Second Half

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – It was a trying home opener for the Wildcats women's basketball team Thursday evening. After a low-scoring three-point margin first half, Georgia Southwestern slowly built its lead in the final 20 minutes and posted a 59-40 victory over host Fort Valley State.

After an Amiya Allen free throw for FVSU (1-4) at 7:03 in the third frame, Ga. Southwestern (4-1) turned a six-point lead into a double-figure difference in the next three minutes later and took a 38-25 advantage into the final period. The Hurricanes expanded the margin to 21 points, 48-27, in the first three minutes of the fourth quarter and the Wildcats were unable to challenge the rest of the way.

Senior Torri Myers guided FVSU with a double-double of 13 points and 12 rebounds to go with two blocked shots. Allen added seven points and seven boards. Ja'Nya Ferguson chipped in seven rebounds and four points, while Kyndall Thomas handed out four assists.

Center Kayla Langley led all scorers with 18 points to pace the Hurricanes.

FVSU did play without its top two scorers of Shekinah Rachel and Diamond Jones in the game. Despite missing the two producers, the Wildcats took the lead, 15-14, on two Allen free throws in the second period after trailing by as many as nine points in the early first quarter. A Myers layup gave FVSU its biggest lead of four, 18-14, before Ga. Southwestern netted the opening half's final seven points for a 21-18 intermission tally.

FVSU will have Friday off before its stays at home to host LeMoyne-Owen College on Saturday afternoon, Dec. 3, in a 1 p.m. tip.
