Doucet Voted SIAC Preseason Men’s Basketball Player of the Year, Wildcats Selected 5th in East

11/3/2022 1:27:00 PM

ATLANTA, Ga. – After solid, but unsatisfying end to last season, the Wildcats are ready to continue their upward trend on the hardwood. Fort Valley State's K.J. Doucet was voted the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Preseason Player of the Year, while his team was selected fifth in the East Division predictions.

The true sophomore forward looks to lead FVSU (8-20) into a highly-successful campaign and deeper run into the SIAC Tournament. In March, the Wildcats fell 10 seconds short of making their first SIAC Semifinals since 2016-17.

The Austell, Ga., product finished his first season seventh in scoring (14.9 ppg) and sixth in free throw percentage (.785). Doucet scored 418 points, grabbed a team-high 150 rebounds (5.4 rpg), and handed out 40 assists. The 6-7 swingman made 136 field goals, 40 3-point field goals and connected on 106 of 135 free throws, while he had 31 steals and 11 blocked shots. Doucet scored in double figures in 24 of 28 games with six efforts of 22-plus points. The returning SIAC Freshman of the Year finished the year on fire with 23 points and 13 rebounds in the SIAC First Round win over Kentucky State, before he posted 25 points and four rebounds in the overtime loss to SIAC East champion Miles College in the Quarterfinals.

Set for his first full season at the helm, FVSU Head Coach Montez Robinson brings his presence to a team selected for fifth in the East Division of the SIAC Preseason poll. After he took over last January 5 with a 1-9 record, Robinson guided the team to a 6-10 mark in the second semester before the near run into the Semifinals.

Morehouse College, Benedict College, Savannah State and Albany State are slated ahead of FVSU in the East. Clark Atlanta, Allen and Edward Waters completed the sixth, seventh and eighth spots.

Along with Doucet, Benedict College's Brandon Beildleman was picked as the Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.

FVUS tips off its 2022-23 season at the SIAC/Gulf South Conference Challenge next Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 11-12. The Wildcats open against the Blazers of Valdosta State in an 8:30 p.m. EST start in Pensacola, Fla., at the University of West Florida.
