Rachel Gains SIAC Women’s Basketball Newcomer of the Week

ATLANTA, Ga. – Starting to make her mark on the team, the Wildcats inside transfer picked up an award. Fort Valley State's Shekinah Rachel gained the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Newcomer of the Week honor announced Tuesday.

In the lone contest of last week, Rachel helped FVSU take the SIAC West-leading Lane College to the brink in a 59-57 tough loss.

Leading 31-30 at intermission, Rachel did the majority of her work in the deciding second half. The senior transfer from Arkansas-Pine Bluff produced 10 points, 10 rebounds, two steals and an assist in the second 20 minutes. She pulled the home FVSU team to within a point, 50-49, with 7:21 left and then added a free at 2:56 to keep it at a one-point game and at 2:12 tied the game, 55-55, with another foul shot. Rachel saw her game-winning inside shot go off the rim in the final seconds.

On the game, the Miami, Fla., native went 4 for 11 from the field and 4 of 6 at the foul line for 12 points to go with the 14 rebounds, her first Wildcat double-double. She also had three steals and an assist.

After seven games, Rachel averages nearly a double-double at 9.8 points and 8.2 rebounds per night.

FVSU travels to play at Kentucky State on Thursday evening, Dec. 15, in a 5:30 p.m. start.
