Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Chris Myers

Wildcats’ 4th-Quarter Charge Falls Short Against Thorobreds

FRANKFORT, Ky. – Playing for the first time in 10 days, the Wildcats showed late-game toughness Thursday night. Trailing by a dozen after three quarters, Fort Valley State mounted an impressive charge in the middle of the final frame to pull within a point two times, but Kentucky State held on to the lead and women's basketball win, 66-62.

Down 57-48 with 6:11 left, FVSU (2-6/2-3 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference East) scored eight-straight points capped by a Ja'Nya Ferguson bucket for a 57-56 margin at 3:39. Nikki Culbreath equaled the point difference, 59-58, with a layup two minutes later (1:29). The Lady Thorobreds (5-3/2-2 SIAC West) answered with the next six tallies to fend off the visitors.

FVSU received 12-point outings from both Amiya Allen and Torri Myers to lead the charge. Allen hit 6 of 13 from the floor to go with three assists and two rebounds, while Myers made 4 of 7 of her shots with five boards and four steals.

Diamond Jones chipped in 11 points and swiped three balls. Ferguson added six points and five rebounds with Ja'Meisha Williams downing a pair of treys and Kyndall Thomas also with six. Culbreath in her first action of the season had six assists, four points, four rebounds and four steals.

Gracen Kerr led all scorers with 18 points for Kentucky State.

The Lady Thorobreds came out strong and led by double digits, 15-5, in the opening five minutes. The Wildcats put in the following seven points, including a Thomas triple, to pull to within 15-12. FVSU did not trail by double figures until a 16-point difference, 50-34, at 1:18 in the third quarter, but it scored the final two baskets.

FVSU continues its north weekend road swing against Central State on Saturday afternoon, Dec. 17, in a 1 p.m. contest.
