Jones Hits for 30 Points, but FVSU Can’t Keep Early Momentum Against Central State

WILBERFORCE, Ohio – The Wildcats have made great strides heading into the break and continued it Saturday afternoon. Despite a Diamond Jones career high 30 points, Fort Valley State could not keep its early-game momentum as Central State rebounded and recorded a 71-66 women's basketball win.

Leading 15-11 with 3:49 left in the opening stanza, FVSU (2-7/2-4 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference East) put in the next six points capped by an Amiya Allen jumper to open a 21-11 margin. A Jones trey answered a home triple for a second 10-point lead, 24-14, at 35 seconds in the first quarter. The Marauders (6-5/4-1 SIAC West) hit the final 3-pointer of the first quarter and went on for a big 23-7 second frame to control the game in the middle parts.

Down by nine points with under three minutes, Nikki Culbreath drained a left-corner triple to pull the Wildcats to within six, 69-63, at 2:16. Jones dropped her fourth 3-pointer with 32 seconds to pull to within 71-66 score, but it was the final points of the game.

Jones finished with a Wildcat career-high of 30 points on 10 of 21 field goals and 4 for 8 from 3-point land. She also grabbed nine rebounds and swiped two passes.
