Wildcats Claim First Win of 2023, Defeat Lady Bears

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – Coming off a long layoff, the Wildcats held up fine against good competition. Fort Valley State finished the third quarter and started the fourth on a combined 12-0 run and it went on for the 54-44 women's basketball victory over Miles College Wednesday evening.

Tied at 27-27, Shekinah Rachel hit an inside jumper and Nikki Culbreath downed a triple to push the Wildcats (3-7/3-4 SIAC East) to a 32-27 lead. After a Miles (7-4/4-3 SIAC West) 3-pointer, Diamond Jones started the key FVSU run with two pairs of free throws to finish the third quarter, added a third pair and a layup for four of the final six points in the fourth frame of the 12-0 run and 42-30 lead with 7:35 left. The Lady Bears were unable to get any closer than 10 points in the final minutes of action.

Jones made 10 of 14 free throws as part of her game-best 21 points to go with five rebounds and five assists. Torri Myers added 11 points and seven rebounds. Rachel had six tallies, while Ja'Nya Ferguson grabbed eight boards and put in four points.

Iemyiah Harris recorded a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds to lead Miles.

FVSU moves on for a Saturday afternoon, Jan. 7, contest to open East Division play at Savannah State. Tip is set for 1 p.m.
