Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Chris Myers

Dragons Edge Wildcats in Final Minute

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – The Wildcats played their best game of the first semester and came up just short. After Fort Valley State pushed ahead by two points, Lane College answered with the last four points and edged a 59-57 women's basketball win in the final 1:20 of the contest.

Trailing by no more than four points for seven minutes of the fourth quarter, the Wildcats (2-5/2-2 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference East) recorded the next six with two points apiece from Torri Myers, Shekinah Rachel and a Diamon Jones inside layup with 1:34 to spurt ahead, 57-55. The Dragons (6-1/4-0 SIAC West) came right back with a 3-pointer 14 seconds later to retake the lead and added a free throw with eight seconds. FVSU could not connect on two final inside layup attempts in the last seconds.

Returning to the lineup after a few games out, Jones led FVSU with 13 points and five assists. Rachel recorded a double-double of 12 points and 14 rebounds. Ja'Meshia Williams hit 5 of 7 shots for her 12-point night, including a pair of treys. Amiya Allen added eight points, while Starr Brown connected on a pair of 3-pointers for her season-best eight tallies.

Lane's two inside players of Kayla Simmons and Brailyn Tate combined for 32 points and 19 rebounds for the game.

Following a Jones inside jumper, FVSU took a 15-11 advantage at the end of 10 minutes of play. Lane held leads of as many as four points, 25-21 and 27-23, before a Myers layup with 59 seconds left gave FVSU a 31-30 intermission edge.

Opposite from the second frame, the Wildcats took a four-point, 36-32, lead on a Rachel bucket early in the third period, but the Dragons held a 46-45 lead going to the final quarter.

FVSU has the next week off for finals before it travels to Frankfort, Ky., to battle Kentucky State on Thursday evening, Dec. 15. Tip is set for 5:30 p.m.
