Jones Pumps in Career-High 29, Wildcats Push Hard Against SIAC East-Leading Tigers

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Wildcats pesky point guard gave all she could against the league's best Thursday night. Diamond Jones pumped in a career-high 29 points as Fort Valley State pushed hard against Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference East-leading Savannah State before it fell by a 95-74 women's basketball total in the end.

After leading by as many as seven points in the opening quarter, FVSU (8-14/3-11 SIAC East) saw back-to-back-to-back buckets to start the second half by Amiya Allen, Torri Myers and Jones to pull back within three points, 45-42. The home Tigers (24-1/16-1 SIAC East) answered with the next eight points and held off the Wildcats from another big push.

Jones posted her career-high with 12 of 18 shooting, including 2 of 3 from long-range, for 29 points to go with nine rebounds, three assists and a steal. Myers chipped in 14 points on 6 of 11 attempts, pulled down six rebounds and swatted two shots. Allen grabbed 12 rebounds to go with five tallies, while Ja'Meisha Williams netted 12 points and six boards.

Le'Andrea Gillis led five Savannah State double-figure scorers with 19 points.

Jones made a free throw two seconds in the contest for the game's first point and put FVSU ahead 5-3 after 1:26. A Williams trey extended the margin to four, 13-9, and Kyndall Thomas made it two triples in a row and 16-9 score. Williams added a layup to equal the seven-point difference, 19-12, with 2:46 in the first frame, before Savannah State rattled off 11-straight and 15 of the final 16 points and a 27-20 lead following 10 minutes of play.

FVSU will now be off until heading to Rock Hill, S.C., next week for the SIAC Championship Tournament. The Wildcats opponent and game time is yet to be determined for Monday, Feb. 28.
