FVSU Gives Benedict All It Can Handles, Late Charge Not Enough

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Against the defending Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champions and senior-laiden team, the Wildcats showed marked improvement in only five days. Fort Valley State gave Benedict College all it could handle Saturday afternoon, but its fourth-quarter charge was just not enough to fall, 98-83, in women's basketball.

Trailing by 24 points after three periods, the Wildcats (5-13/3-10 SIAC East) mounted a hard-charging comeback attempt three minutes into the fourth frame. FVSU ran off nine-straight points to cut the margin to 16 points, 83-67, at 6:04 and wasn't done. The visitors outscored the Tigers (16-6/10-2 SIAC East), 10-4, in the following 2:25 to make it an 87-77 score. Benedict, though, fended off FVSU in the final three minutes to seal the win.

On Monday night in Fort Valley, the Wildcats had a much rougher evening and dropped a 92-51 decision. The 15-point Saturday loss showed a 26-point FVSU improvement in the practice time during the week.

Diamond Jones guided the FVSU effort with 23 points on 7 of 12 attempts and 7 for 7 from the foul line to go with five assists and three rebounds. Jah'ne Brown was right behind her with 20 points on 8 of 14 shots and three boards. On the inside, Ja'Nya Ferguson and Torri Myers also hit for double figures with 12 and 10 tallies and combined for nine rebounds.

Of its six double-digit producers, Ay'Anna Bey held top honors with 21 points for Benedict.

The Tigers controlled the opening 4:20 of action with the game's first 11 points. But from that point, the Wildcats rebounded and were a pesky group the rest of the way. The visitors outscored Benedict, 13-7, in the final 5:40 of the opening quarter to pull to within 18-13.

FVSU has Sunday off before it makes the return trip to Columbia, S.C. for a Monday evening, Feb. 7, contest at Allen University. Tip is set for 5:30 p.m.
