Savannah State Final-Second Shot Takes Victor from FVSU in 2OT

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – Welcoming fans back to the arena for the first time in 2022, the Wildcats saw victory slip through their hands to send the crowd home happy. Savannah State's Marcus Scott dropped the game-winning shot in the lane with six-tenths of a second left in double overtime to take victory from Fort Valley State, 69-68, in men's basketball Wednesday night.

FVSU (5-16/4-8 SIAC East) had numerous chances late in the both regulation and the first overtime to seal the win, but it came up short in the final four possessions of the second half and last five of the first overtime. Down 67-66 with 15 seconds left in the second extra period, Kenton Eskridge stole the ball from the Tigers (8-10/6-6 SIAC East) in the backcourt and found Jacobi Coleman for the wild turn of events layup for a 68-67 lead with 8.6 ticks left. Savannah State worked the ball right away to the left corner where Scott drove in, lofted a five-foot shot and watched it touch rim twice before falling through with 0.6 seconds for the win.

Ty'Reek Johnson was the Wildcats top performer with his best game of the season of 28 points on 10 of 15 shooting and 7 of 8 free throws, while he swiped five passes including both passes to end regulation and the first overtime. K.J. Doucet scored 11 points, but the top FVSU scorer fouled out with 5:24 left in the second half. Joe Williams and Kenton Eskridge both chipped in eight points.

Avery Joyner hit for 23 points, including five treys, to lead the Tigers.

After a 30-30 tie at intermission, FVSU seemed to be in control after a Doucet dunk game the home team a 12-point, 57-45, advantage with 7:23 to go. Savannah State, though, netted the next 10 points over only a 2:10 stretch to make it 57-55 and the thrilling end all the way to two extra 5-minute periods was on.

FVSU looks to regroup on the road Saturday night, Feb. 12, in an 8 p.m. contest at rival Albany State.
