Wildcats Lose OT Heartbreaker to Bears in SIAC Quarterfinals

ROCK HILL, SC – The Wildcats was so close to victory they could taste it. After a 3-pointer with under three seconds sent the game to overtime, Miles continued to score the extra period's first 10 points and gave Fort Valley State a heartbreaking, 65-53, loss in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Quarterfinals.

Trailing 44-36 with 5:49 left, FVSU captured all the momentum and raced to a 12-0 run on the back of SIAC Freshman of the Year K.J. Doucet, who accounted for the final 10 points of the run, for a sudden 48-44 advantage. Doucet added two free throws with 10.1 ticks to make it a 50-47 margin. Following a timeout, Miles was able to get Elijah Horton at the top-of-the-key for the tying trey with 2.6 seconds left at 50. The SIAC West champion Bears used the game-tying shot and went out and put the first 10 points of the extra five minutes of overtime on the board. Kenton Eskridge made the Wildcats' lone bucket, a deep 3-pointer, with 1:27, of their 12 field goal tries.

Doucet finished with a game-high 25 points on 9 of 15 shooting, including 2 of 3 from long-range and all five of his free throws, while he had four rebounds and four steals. Eskridge added 10 points and four boards. Pierre Mitchell chipped in seven tallies.

Mykayle Carter led Miles with 17 points and eight rebounds.

In a cold shooting half and low-scoring first half, the two clubs combined to make only 17 of 59 attempts as the Bears led 20-18.
