FVSU’s Williams Kicks Way to SIAC Special Teams Player of the Week

9/26/2022 2:47:00 PM

ATLANTA, Ga. – When called upon last Saturday, the young Wildcat kicker came through each time. Fort Valley State's Rodney Williams, Jr., kicked his way to the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Football Special Teams Player of the Week announced on Monday.

After first earning the award two weeks ago, the first-year placekicker/punter repeated the feat with an even better day. The Covington, Ga., native connected on 3-of-3 field goal attempts of 29, 26 and his longest of 35 yards on the final play of the first half to give FVSU a 23-21 lead it would not give up. Williams also made all five of his point after attempt kicks for a total of 14 points on the day to help the Wildcats improve to a perfect 4-0 record after the final seconds ticked away of the 44-27 victory at Bluefield State Saturday afternoon.

Williams did not stop with his placekicking duties. The freshman Wildcat recorded a 45.7-yard per punt average on three punts with a long of 63 yards which flipped the field as he placed the ball inside the home 20-yardline. He also posted a 57.4-yard average on eight kick-offs covering 459 yards.

Williams and the Wildcats return to their home Wildcat Stadium for Homecoming in The Valley this Saturday, Oct. 1. It will be a battle of unbeaten as FVSU hosts Benedict College in a 2 p.m. kick-off.
