Wildcats Place Three on All-SIAC Preseason Men’s Volleyball, Team Voted Fourth

1/12/2023 2:27:00 PM

ATLANTA, Gla. – The Wildcats are reloaded and are ready a big sophomore program campaign. Fort Valley State placed the trio of Oshane Farquharson and Rashaun Wright on the All-Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Preseason Men's Volleyball Team, while the team was voted fourth heading into the year.

After a foundation first year, FVSU recorded an 8-15 campaign and a third-place run in the SIAC Tournament. A first year featured not only the introduction of the newest Wildcat athletic program, but also one which hosted UCLA to wrap up the home schedule.

Farquharson and Yates both earned 2022 All-SIAC Second Team honors and one of the league's premiere blockers, Wright, joins them on the Preseason Second Team.

Farquharson from Hollywood, Fla., led the FVSU frontline with 223 kills in 77 sets at 2.89 per set (3rd best in the SIAC). The outside hitter rounded out his first year totals with 41 total blocks, 122 digs, 13 set assists and nine service aces.

Yates of Carlsbad, Calif., guided the FVSU offense at setter where he led the SIAC in assists at 8.43 per set. On the year, the sophomore handed out 649 assists in 77 sets. He also lined 51 kills, 10 service aces, 86 digs and 26 total blocks.

Joining his teammates, Wright gives FVSU one of the top blockers to the defense's frontline. The D'Abadie, Trinidad & Tobago native tied for the conference lead at 0.88 blocks per set last spring. The sophomore registered 57 total blocks in 65 sets played. He was also eighth in the SIAC in service aces at 0.32 per set (15). Wright downed 88 kills with a team-high .383 hit percentage to go with four assists and 37 digs.

In the team voting, last year's runner-up Edward Waters was picked as the preseason favorite, while defending champion Central State is second. FVSU rated fourth after Benedict College in third with Kentucky State and Morehouse finishing the six-team field.

FVSU opens its 2023 docket on the road at Erskine College on Saturday, Jan. 21, in a 3 p.m. match.
