Allen Proves to Be Too Much for FVSU Women’s Hoops Saturday

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – The Wildcats pushed hard late, but they couldn't overcome the deficit. Fort Valley State cut the margin to five points with under seven minutes to play, but Allen University answered the home surge with the next nine points to go on for the 73-59 women's basketball victory.

Trailing by 13 points, FVSU (3-10/3-7 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference East) saw Nikki Culbreath hit a running jumper, Diamond Jones add four points and Torri Myers lay in a putback to make it 59-54 at 6:42 on the clock. The Lady Jackets (7-6/4-5 SIAC East) netted the next nine scores and 14 of the game's final 19 points for the 14-point margin.

Jones kept the Wildcats in the game with her second 30-point game of the season with 34 points on 12 of 23 shooting, including four 3-pointers and 6 of 8 free throws. She also pulled down four rebounds and swiped three passes.

Myers chipped in 11 points and nine rebounds, while Shekinah Rachel grabbed nine caroms herself to go with four points.

Keyshuna Fair led the visitors with 18 points as one of four double-figure scorers.

The two teams combined for 63 turnovers, while FVSU outrebounded Allen, 39-28.

FVSU will stay at home where it will host Benedict College on Monday night, Jan. 16, at 5:30 p.m.
