FVSU Posts Dominate Third Quarter, Propels Past ASU

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – The Wildcats came out hard in the third quarter and it decided Saturday night's women's basketball Homecoming game. After the opening Albany State bucket of the second half, Fort Valley State ran off nine-straight and outscored its rival by 13 points in the frame to propel it to a 58-49 victory.
 
Down 32-30 after the third-quarter's first basket, Diamond Jones drained a triple off a Nikki Culbreath pass 11 seconds later and the Wildcats (4-11/4-8 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference East) never trailed the final 18:45. An Amiya Allen layup capped the 18-5 third quarter with 1:56 to go for a 48-35 lead. Allen increased the margin in the fourth quarter to 16, 54-38, with 4:17 remaining before ASU (6-12/4-8 SIAC East) cut the score down to seven points, 56-49, with 17 seconds left. Culbreath sealed the win with a pair of free throws at 14 seconds to end the scoring.
 
Jones hit 6 of 10 attempts, 3 of 5 from 3-point range for her 15 points to go with two assists and three steals. Allen was 4 for 6 for 10 points, while Shekinah Rachel produced 12 points, eight rebounds, two blocks and five steals. Culbreath finished with seven points, four rebounds and four assists. Torri Myers chipped in six points and five boards, while Ja'Nya Fergson had six points and six caroms.
 
Ka'Shay Hankerson led all scoring with a game-high 20 points for the Lady Rams.
 
The two teams both scored 14 points in the first frame and 16 in the second for a 30-30 intermission tally.
 
FVSU is now off until next Wednesday, Jan. 25, in a 5:30 p.m. home matchup against Clark Atlanta.
