Morehouse Holds off FVSU Final Charge

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – In a final Monday night push, the Wildcats were unable to capture the advantage. Morehouse College held off the Fort Valley State final charge and captured the 73-68 men's basketball win.
 
Trailing 67-56 with 3:25 left, the Wildcats (8-12/6-7 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference East) netted the next seven points to cut the margin to four, 67-63, in 2:03 off the clock. A K.J. Doucet triple knocked another point off the difference, 69-66, with 44 ticks. The Maroon Tigers (8-8/5-6 SIAC East) added a pair of free throws with 19 seconds, before Sincere Whitehead laid in a putback for the home team, 71-68, at seven seconds. FVSU narrowly missed forcing back-to-back five-second calls, but Morehouse held on.
 
Doucet made 9 of 16 attempts for a FVSU best 21 points to go with five rebounds, five assists and two steals. Myson Lowe downed four 3-pointers as part of his 15 points, while Jamal Reynolds added 11points. Whitehead contributed six points, seven rebounds and a pair of blocked shots in his first action.
 
Ibn Williams guided the Maroon Tigers with 15 points and six assists.
 
Joe Williams hit a inside left-handed shot to give FVSU a five-point lead, 12-7, only 6:21 into the night. The Wildcats held two more five-point margins, 23-18 and 25-20, but the Maroon Tigers hit the final five points of the opening 20 minutes for a 28-27 intermission edge.
 
FVSU completes its five-game homestand with a Wednesday night, Jan. 25, matchup against Clark Atlanta. Tip is set for 7:30 p.m.
