Reynolds Named SIAC Men’s Basketball Preseason Defensive Player of the Year

ATLANTA, Ga. – After a breakout season on defense last campaign, Fort Valley State's Jamal Reynolds was named the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Preseason Defensive Player of the Year announced on Wednesday morning.
 
The junior from Atlanta became a defensive disrupter and steal specialist from his guard position last season. With his prowess, Reynolds was voted the 2022-23 SIAC Defensive Player of the Year and All-SIAC Second Team status.
 
With his last season award, Jamal starts this year as the defending Defensive Player of the Year. The third-year player also moves up to the Preseason All-SIAC First Team.
 
Reynolds helped FVSU win its most games in a season in the last decade at 14-15. He finished with a 62 steals and 2.14 per game over those 29 games along with 104 rebounds (3.6 rpg). Reynolds took away at least one steal in each of the team's final 22 games and recorded 17 multiple steal outings. He grabbed six steals at Allen, five against Benedict College and four of the two games against Savannah State. The Lovejoy High alum also pulled down nine rebounds two times and clutched at least four boards 15 times.
 
Reynolds increased all his offensive output a year ago as he did defensively. The Wildcat backcourt player finished last season at 6.5 points (188 total points) and 1.7 assists (49 total). He also increased his field goal shooting to one of the SIAC's top rates at .504 (69 of 137). Jamal tallied a season-high 11 points three times and hit for double figures six contests.
 
FVSU and Reynolds will tip-off their 2023-24 season on Friday night, Nov. 10, in the SIAC-Gulf South Conference challenge against Valdosta State played at Clark Atlanta. Tip is set for 6 p.m.
