Wildcats Second-Half Surge Not Enough in Opener Against Bobcats

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Wildcats showed they can claw all game Wednesday night. Fort Valley State's second-half surge proved to not be enough as Georgia College women's basketball prevailed, 90-68, in the season opener.

Trailing 48-25 at intermission, Ace Stevenson cut the FVSU deficit down to 15 points twice in the second part of the third quarter, 57-42 and 65-50. With the margin at 66-50 heading into the final 10 minutes, the Wildcats saw the two Allen players continue the fight after the team won the third frame by seven points (25-18). Amiya Allen started the scoring with a bucket, before Aaniyah Allen made her own jumper and added a free throw to pull FVSU to within 11 points, 66-55, with 8:34 left. Georgia College, though reestablished itself and went on for the win.

Aaniyah Allen led FVSU in her first game with the team at 15 points on 5 of 11 shooting and three assists. Taylor Addison contributed 12 points on 4 of 7 field goals. Ayani Cockrell went 3 for 3 to make eight tallies and pulled down four boards. Amiya Allen added eight points, three rebounds and a pair of assists. Stevenson finished with her own eight points and Camryn Oneill handed out four assists.

The Bobcats ruled the glass by a 47-26 margin on the night. Hannah Cail paced her team for 20 points.

After the home team made the open basket, Aaniyah Allen tied the contest, 2-2, 58 seconds into the matchup. Following a Cockrell bucket to cut the margin to 8-6, Georgia College had the run of the night of 12-2 for the separation it would need the rest of the night by going ahead 20-8.

FVSU will be off until it hosts the same Georgia College team in its home opener next Tuesday evening, Nov. 21, in a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.
