Lions Clip Wildcats in Final Two Minutes

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – The Wildcats showed flashes of pulling away Thursday night, but they were unable to get the separation. Paine College took the lead with 2:17 left and hung on for the 78-76 men's basketball upset over Fort Valley State.

After a Kenton Eskridge deep jumper, FVSU (0-3) enjoyed a 74-71 advantage with 4:07 on the clock. Following a Lions free throw, Amarie Kirby pumped in a right-corner 3-pointer to edge ahead, 75-74. Eskridge, again, put points up on a driving layup with 9.8 second remaining to pull the Wildcats to within a point, 77-76. Paine College (1-3), though, was able to work the ball down the court before FVSU fouled. The home team's final inbounds pass was deflected to end the contest.

Khadim Samb scored 19 of his FVSU game-high 21 points in the first half and finished 6 of 11 with a pair of treys. He added 11 rebounds for the double-double and handed out four assists. Eskridge tallied 12 of his 17 points in the final 20 minutes on 7 of 10 from the floor to go with five assists and four boards. Myson Lowe added 15 points with a trio of 3-pointers. Jahlen Jack contributed eight points and five rebounds.

Point guard Quinton Jackson powered Paine with a 7 of 15 night including 4 of 5 from long-range for 24 points to go with eight assists and four rebounds.

Trailing 31-27 with 4:45 in the first half, FVSU finished the opening stanza strong. The Wildcats went on a 9-2 run to pull ahead, 36-33, less than two minutes later before continuing the good play for a 44-35 halftime score.

FVSU will have a day off before it travels to Carrollton, Ga., to battled West Georgia Saturday afternoon, Nov. 18, in a 4 p.m. tip-off.
