FORT VALLEY, Ga. – The Wildcats are starting to come together and learn to mix the experience and youth on the court. For the second time in three days, Fort Valley State made a key move in the second and pushed past Spring Hill College for a 46-38 women's basketball victory Monday night.
Trailing 33-32 with 3:36 left in the second half, the Wildcats (2-2) started the game-deciding spurt. Over the next 7:24 of game time, FVSU put the next 12 of 14 points onto the scoreboard and ran ahead to a 42-35 advantage with 6:22 left in the contest after back-to-back Shekinah Rachel layups finished the point production. The home team outscored the Badgers, 4-3 in those final six minutes of action for the second victory in a row.
Freshman Aaniyah Allen led the FVSU charge with 13 points, seven rebounds, four steals and two assists. Rachel was right behind with 12 points to go with seven boards, three assists and three steals. Ayani Cockrell had her best game of the early season with eight points and seven steals, while Taylor Addison chipped in three buckets for six points.
Spring Hill College received a double-double from Marta Duda of 16 points on 7 of 11 shooting and 10 boards.
The Badgers started the night with a 7-2 spurt over the final 6:36 of the opening quarter for a 12-8 lead. The visitors continued good early play as they increased the margin to seven points twice including at intermission of 27-20.
Over the opening 5:33 of the third frame, FVSU chipped away at the deficit until Allen banked home the layup for the home team's first lead since the early first quarter, 33-32. The Wildcat lead lasted only 41 seconds when the Badgers edged ahead, 33-32, before the game-deciding home squad run.
FVSU takes to the road this weekend where it will travel across Tennessee to Memphis and face LeMoyne-Owen College in a 1 p.m. contest Saturday afternoon, Dec. 2, in a HBCUGo telecast.
