ASU Edges Past FVSU Women’s Basketball

ALBANY, Ga. – It was rivalry game number two on Saturday afternoon. After Fort Valley State led most of the first 30 minutes, Albany State edged out eight of the final 11 points in the last five minutes for the 48-44 women's basketball win.
 
Following the Lady Rams (7-16/6-12 SIAC East) netting the final seven points of the third frame for a three-point lead going to the final quarter, the Wildcats (5-15/5-12 SIAC East) tied the contest three times – 33-33, 35-35 and 39-39 – in the first 3:40 of the fourth. Torri Myers gave FVSU what would be its final lead, 41-40, at 5:45 on a inside jumper. While the Wildcats missed its next five shots from the field, four foul shots and added a turnover, the Lady Rams put five points on the scoreboard for a 45-41 advantage. Diamond Jones downed a trey with 1:27 left for a one-point, 45-44, game, but the home team made three of four free throws in the final six seconds to seal the win.
 
Myers made 7 of 10 from the floor for a FVSU-high 14 points to go with six rebounds. Amiya Allen added 11 points. Jones finished with a line of 10 points, eight steals, seven assists and six boards. Shekinah Rachel contributed seven points and four rebounds.
 
Milana Holmes led ASU with 13 points.
 
FVSU took a 13-11 lead into the second frame where it extended the difference to five, 19-14, on an Allen layup at 5:21. The visitors held a 19-18 lead at intermission.
 
FVSU has a week off until it hosts Edward Waters next Saturday afternoon, Feb. 18, in a 1 p.m. contest.
