Yates Receives SIAC Men’s Volleyball Setter of the Week

ATLANTA – After a challenging road swing last weekend, the Wildcats grabbed a weekly honor. Fort Valley State's Justin Yates received the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men's Volleyball Setter of the Week announced on Thursday.

The sophomore offensive quarterback helped FVSU (2-9) win at Lees-McRae (3-1) last Thursday before the team fell by identical 3-1 finals to Belmont Abbey College and Limestone College on Friday and Saturday.

For the three matches, Yates of Carlsbad, Calif., handed out 81 assists, dug 20 attacks, five kills and a pair of blocks.

Starting the week in the win over Lees-McRae, Yates posted 32 assists, eight digs and four kills. He followed with his first double-double of the season with 37 assists and 10 digs to go with four kills and two blocks against Belmont Abbey. Wrapping up the weekend, the second-year setter had 28 assists, nine digs and a kill at Limestone.

For the season in 34 sets, Yates averages 9.24 assists (314) and 1.68 digs (57) to go with 15 kills, three aces and 11 blocks.

FVSU returns to action with a pair of home matches starting tomorrow night (Feb. 23) in a 6 p.m. match against Tusculum University and a 3 p.m. Saturday contest versus Lincoln Memorial.
