FVSU Set for Familiar SIAC Tournament Opening Foe Sunday

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – After recording its best game of the year to finish off the regular season Tuesday evening, the Wildcats head to the postseason on a high note. For the second year in a row, Fort Valley State will face LeMoyne-Owen College in the opening round of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Tournament.
 
Despite Tuesday's upset win over Savannah State, FVSU (6-16) goes to the SIAC Tournament as the number seven seed from the East Division. LeMoyne-Owen (9-18) finished as the number six team of the West Division. The two foes, which met in the 2022 Round 1, will face off again Sunday afternoon (Feb. 26) in a 2 p.m. tip at Tiger Arena on Savannah State's campus.

FVSU vs. LeMoyne Owen
Sunday, Feb. 26 – 2 p.m.

 
It will be a rematch of a low-scoring contest from December 3rd in Fort Valley. The Wildcats pushed past a slow start and made up for it in the final two periods. Fort Valley State doubled its output in the second half and ground out a win over LeMoyne-Owen, 54-48.

The Magicians doubled up its host 16-8 in the opening 10 minutes and enjoyed a 25-19 intermission advantage. FVSU used the first five minutes of the third frame to turn the tide with a 6-1 spurt to tie, 26-26. Only a couple minutes later, Amiya Allen stole a pass and raced to the other end for the layup for the first home lead, 30-28, at 1:45 in the third. The Wildcats never gave up the advantage despite the difference going down to just two, 36-34 and 38-36, in the opening minutes of the fourth, before they secured the win in the end.
 
Allen led the Wildcats with 11 points, three rebounds and two assists, while Kyndall Thomas added nine points and six boards. Ace Stevenson chipped in eight points and four rebounds.
 
Robbie Johnson and Kike Ojo both scored nine points for LeMoyne-Owen.
 
 
FVSU at 2022 SIAC Tournament
 
FVSU and LeMoyne-Owen met in the 2022 SIAC Tournament Round 1 on Monday, Feb. 28. A Torri Myers layup with 24 seconds pushed the Wildcats ahead, 46-45, before Diamond Jones added two free throws with three second remaining to seal the 48-45 win.
 
Myers scored 20 of the team's 48 points to go with nine rebounds, three steals and two blocked shots. Jones and Allen both had six points.
 
FVSU met Savannah State in the Quarterfinals two days later, but could not get past the eventual SIAC Runner-up in a 91-64 final.
