Benedict Clips FVSU Women’s Basketball in Final Moments

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Wildcats came within seconds of pulling the road upset Saturday afternoon. After leading the majority of the contest, Fort Valley State saw Benedict College score eight-straight points over a 1:12 frame in the in final 96 seconds to edge ahead, and visitor final game-tying 3-point try fell just off the rim for the at the buzzer for the 52-49 women's basketball home win.
 
Diamond Jones connected on the second of two free throws for a Wildcats (4-14/4-11 SIAC East) 48-42 lead with 1:36 left. The Lady Tigers (10-12/8-8 SIAC East) made two pair of free throws around two empty Wildcats possessions, before they drained a 3-pointer with 41 seconds to take a 49-48 lead. Trailing 50-48, Nikki Culbreath made a free throw, but FVSU was unable to made two shots after rebounding her second free throw. Culbreath lofted a potential game-tying 3-pointer at the buzzer, but it was too strong.
 
Leading FVSU, Shekinah Rachel posted a double-double of 14 points and 13 rebounds to go with three steals and two blocked shots. Jones added 11 points and four assists and Ja'Meisha Williams contributed seven tallies.
 
Taylor Christmas finished with top Benedict honors with 14 points.
 
FVSU took its first lead of the day, 9-7 with 2:48 in the first quarter, on a Ja'Nya Ferguson jump shot. Benedict netted the final five points of the first frame for a 16-12 advantage.
 
The Wildcats outscored the home team, 18-10, in the second 10 minutes, including the final seven for a halftime lead of 30-26.
 
FVSU ran off a second seven-point spurt to finish the third quarter after a Rachel layup for a 40-35 lead. The Wildcats added an 8-2 run to lead 48-42 at 1:36 to set up the final moments.
 
FVSU stays on the road in Columbia where it plays Monday night, February 6, in a 5:30 p.m. contest at Allen University.
