FVSU Nets First 10 Points, Never Trails in Upset over Allen

COLUMBIA, S.C. – On Monday night, the Wildcats played like they were the one near the top of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference East standings. Fort Valley State netted the first 10 points of the game and never trailed in a 74-60 women's hoops upset over Allen University.

Over the first 3:37 of the night, Shekinah Rachel scored four buckets and Torri Myers the other to run FVSU to a 10-0 lead. The Wildcats (5-14/5-11 SIAC East) allowed the host Lady Yellow Jackets (12-10/8-9 SIAC East) to get to within four points twice, 23-19 and 29-25, in the first half and again once early in both the third (47-43) and fourth periods (49-45). Each time FVSU had the answer including the final one by Diamond Jones' back-to-back jump shots followed by one from Amiya Allen for a 62-48 margin with 5:20 left. Only two minutes later, Nikki Culbreath swished two foul shots for a 66-56 score and the difference never dipped below double digits again.

Jones finished with top Wildcat honors with 19 points on 6 of 14 shooting and 6 of 7 free throws. Culbreath recorded an all-around game of 16 points on 4 of 7 from the floor, including both her 3-point attempts and all six free throws, to go with eight assists and four rebounds. After eight points in the first four minutes, Rachel totaled 13 points for the night and three blocked shots. Allen pulled down 10 rebounds to go with six points.

FVSU won the glass battle, 41-36, but it outshot the home club by a wide percentage (45.0 to 30.9%).

Keyshauna Fair held the point lead for Allen with 11 points.

With its slimmest margin of the night (47-44), freshman Jalexcia Hargrove laid the ball in for a 49-44 lead after 30 minutes. Following the Allen first bucket of the final quarter, FVSU took control for the rest of the night.

FVSU will now be off the rest of the week until its rematch against rival Albany State on the road Saturday evening, Feb. 11, with a 6 p.m. tip-off.
