Wildcats Use Early 3-Pointers for Lead, Register Second SIAC Tourney Upset

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Despite travel difficulties getting to the arena, the Wildcats were undeterred Tuesday night. Fort Valley State used four key 3-pointers in the first 10:50 of the contest to go out to a double-digit lead, controlled the game and registered its second Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Tournament upset with a 63-48 win over Benedict College in Round 2.

After the opening bucket went to the Lady Tigers, Nikki Culbreath connected on two treys for an 8-2 lead 6:29 into the night. Amiya Allen added her own just over two minutes later and Kyndall Thomas pushed the advantage to double figures, 16-6, with her first triple 50 seconds into the second quarter. The Wildcats built the difference to as many as 17 points in the first half and 19 points, 32-13, only 53 seconds into the second half on a Diamond Jones 3-pointer as they never let the favored Lady Tigers closer than eight points in the fourth frame.

With the second victory, FVSU moves on to the SIAC Quarterfinals against the SIAC West second-seeded Miles College on Thursday afternoon (March 2) in a 2:30 p.m. tip back in Savannah State's Tiger Arena. The two teams split a pair of meetings during the regular season with each winning on their own home court – Miles won 62-49 in Farfield, Ala. on Nov. 19 and FVSU won in Fort Valley by a 54-44 tally on Jan. 4.

Against Benedict, All-SIAC 2nd Team member Jones led FVSU with 18 points with two treys and 10 of 12 from the foul line with six rebounds and four assists. Culbreath finished with 11 points, including a trio of 3-pointers, five boards and two helpers. Shekinah Rachel added nine points and six boards, while Ja'Nya Ferguson contributed eight points and eight rebounds off the bench.

Both Taylor Christmas and Madison Golden put in 11 points for Benedict.

Culbreath's third 3-pointer of the first half gave FVSU a 21-8 edge with 3:32 in the second frame before Ferguson converted a 3-point play to make it 27-10 at 1:08. FVSU took a 29-13 intermission lead.

Along with starting the third period with a 3-pointer, Jones finished it with another at 1:39 in the third for a 41-26 lead.

Benedict cut the margin down to eight points twice, 47-39 and again at 48-40 with 5:45, in the fourth quarter, but Rachel converted a layup on the other end to stymie the potential comeback momentum.
