Wildcat Volleyball Duo Receive SIAC Weekly Awards

ATLANTA, Ga. – In the final weeks of the regular season, the Wildcats had two grab league honors. Fort Valley State's Justin Yates and Rashaun Wright received the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men's Volleyball Setter and Defensive Player of the Week awards.

FVSU (7-17) split a pair of SIAC home matches last week with a 3-0 sweep of Kentucky State before it saw a 2-0 lead fall away and were upended, 15-13, in the fifth set of the 3-2 loss to Central State.

In the two matches, Yates of Carlsbad, Calif., guided the Wildcat attack where he handed out 63 assists to go with 14 digs, four blocks, three kills and an ace. Against Kentucky State, the sophomore recorded 26 assists, two digs and a block assist. On following night versus Central State, the setter posted 37 assists and 12 digs for a double-double to go with three kills, three blocks and a service ace.

Wright led the FVSU defense in the two matches where was part of six home blocks, while he downed nine kills without an error in 16 attacks for a .563 percentage, three aces and four digs. In the first match, the second-year middle blocker registered four kills, three aces, three, digs and two blocks. In the five-set match, the D'Abadie, Trinidad & Tobago native contributed five kills in nine attacks (.556) with four total blocks, an assist and one dig.

On the season, Yates leads the SIAC with 8.27 assists per set and 620 for the season over 75 sets played. He also has 110 digs and 23 blocks. Over 59 sets, Wright has totaled a team-leading 45 total blocks to go with 42 kills, .265 percentage, and seven aces.

The Wildcat duo and the rest of the FVSU team host Edward Waters tonight, April 13, in a 6 p.m. match at the HPE Arena.
