BEAUFORT, S.C. – The Wildcats returned to competition after a week off Saturday morning. Fort Valley State cross country teams raced in the University of South Carolina Beaufort's Sand Shark Invitational.
Katelynn Hodges ran to the Wildcat women's top time of 24:32.8 (62nd) and Elijah Taylor had the men's top finish in 35:32.8 (76th).
On the women's side, FVSU logged a 13th-place finish with a score of 365 of the 15 teams. Winthrop bested Converse and Georgia Southern with a score of 37 to the next two team's 50 and 60. Lauren Beatty from Converse won the individual title in 18:08.5 over Ga. Southern's Isabel Placek (18:24.3).
In the men's team standings, the Wildcats were 14th at 418. Converse College grabbed the team title with 27 over Winthrop's 53. Wintrop's Daren Hinds took the medalist award by 18 seconds with a time of 24:57.4 over Alain Flores of Converse (25:45.1).
After Hodges' 62nd place, the Wildcats had their other four close together. Jenna Jones cross the line in 73rd (27:54.5), while Azaniah White (28:53.7), Dalivia McBride (29:39.0) and Nyah Jones (30:00.0) were 75th, 77th and 78th.
Following Taylor for the men, FVSU saw Larry Turner as the next finisher in 37:37.0 (80th). Julian Stafford, Trenis Edmond and Gavon Hall-Huggins completed the runners in 85th (40:25.7), 88th (44:07.6) and 89th (44:26.7).
FVSU will have next weekend off before it drives up to the Premiere Course in Macon, Ga., for the SIAC Championship on Friday morning (Oct. 25).
