COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Wildcats returned to action on the court for the first time in two weeks Friday evening. After splitting the opening two sets, Fort Valley State took the third and fourth sets for the 3-1 women's volleyball road win over Allen University.
Trailing by seven late (21-14), FVSU cut the margin to three before it scored the final six tallies for a 25-23 opening set win. Allen tied the match in the second, 25-22. The Wildcats built a six-point lead early in the third set (11-5) and only let it dip until that difference once before they posted a 25-16 victory. The Yellow Jackets pushed last in the fourth game and tied it at both 24-24 and 25-25 before a Dakotah Holmes kill and a bad home set ended the match at 27-25.
With the win, FVSU (4-2/3-2 SIAC) snapped a 3-match losing streak on Allen's court with the last victory coming on Nov. 1 of 2021 in a 3-0 final. Allen moves to 3-6 on the year and 2-4 in the league.
Both Benaye Kyle and Caytlyn Sanford pounded 11 kills apiece. Kyle had a double-double with 11 kills. Holmes downed nine winners and dug a team-best 20 attacks. Antonique Coleman continued her strong hitting with seven kills with a .462 hitting percentage, six blocks and a pair of aces. Laila Hilton added six kills and Nia Mack added four.
Laiani McCullough was the second of three double-double Wildcats with 24 assists and 17 digs. Jahyra Thomas had an all-around game with 17 assists and 10 digs while she hit four kills and served two aces. Chaiza Jones recorded 16 digs and Sarah Rosario had three.
FVSU has a short rest time as it has to turnaround and take the court again on Saturday morning (Oct. 5) in a 10:30 a.m. first serve at Benedict College.
