Wildcats Roar Back, Fall Short in Final Seconds to Thorobreds

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Wildcats showed their drive to rebound Saturday afternoon. After being down by double figures, Fort Valley State roared back to take the lead, but Kentucky State edged out the win, 47-44, in the final seconds in women's basketball.

Trailing 28-17 at halftime, FVSU used a 10-2 run over the final six minutes of the third frame for a 33-33 deadlock heading into the final 10 minutes. Cori Barnes drained her first of three treys 57 seconds into the fourth for the Wildcats first lead since 4:35 in the first quarter, 36-33. The sophomore's second and third 3-pointers pushed her team back ahead at 41-39 with 1:38 and again at 44-43 with 36 seconds remaining. Kentucky State, though, put the ball through the net with 14 seconds and retook the lead, 45-44, and added a pair of free throws with three seconds, while FVSU committed two turnovers in the same final seconds.

With its slow start, FVSU (1-2/0-2 SIAC East) made only 7 of 29 shots from the floor in the first half before it improved to 10 of 26 in the final 20 minutes.

Behind her 3 for 7 from long range, Barnes finished as the lone double-digit scorer with 11 points to go with three rebounds.

The three Wildcats of Camryn Oneill, Arieonna Booker and Delissa Kerr each chipped in six points. Oneill grabbed eight rebounds and stole six passes, and Kier had five boards.

Leading scorer Aaniyah Allen had a tough shooting day and totaled only four points, but she contributed four rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block. Kimora Wade added four points and Makayla Arnold three points and two caroms. Ja'Nya Ferguson, who had four rebounds, and Jalexicia Hargrove rounded out the visitor scoring with a bucket each.

Both Diara McBroom and Bailey Lee paced the Thorobreds with 11 points.

Tied at 2-2 early, Arnold gave the visitors their first lead, 4-2, before Kier did the same on back-to-back layups with the second at 8-6 with 4:35. Kentucky State put the final seven points on the board for a 13-8 score.

Allen pulled FVSU back to within two, 16-14, with 2:04 before half only to see the home team rattled off the ensuing 12 points for the largest margin of the day, 28-14 at 52 seconds.

FVSU will have a week off from its weekend road trip before it travels to Thomasville, Ga., for a 12 p.m. tip-off next Saturday (Nov. 23) at Thomas University.
