FORT VALLEY, Ga. – The Wildcats put their first victory in the win column Friday afternoon. Fort Valley State took advantage of a visitor miscue for the game-winning run, 4-3, in the opener before Montreat College picked up the split with a 9-0 final in six innings for the late game.
After allowing three scores in the top of the first, FVSU (1-3) received a Chasity Kates run-scoring triple followed by back-to-back RBI hits from Mariah Williams and Leah Leonard to tie the opener. Following two outs, Leonard doubled and scored on a Montreat error on Riley Youngblood's grounder, before Taylor Orr held the Cavaliers scoreless in the final two frames for the Wildcat win.
In the late game, Montreat, again, put three runs right away on the scoreboard in the first, added a single fourth-frame score and sealed the win with five more tallies in the sixth. Williams singled in home first and third as the lone two FVSU hits recorded.
Williams led the home hitters with a 3 for 5 day with an RBI and a stolen base. Leonard doubled, singled and score the winning run in the first contest. Kates sliced a triple, while each of Laila Leverett, E'Lisia Vickers and Alexia Scott singled. Taylor Orr picked up her first collegiate win in the circle covering the the final 2.1 innings where she allowed only one hit.
FVSU returns to the diamond on Sunday afternoon (Feb. 11) in a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Wesleyan College.
