FORT VALLEY, Ga. – The Wildcats kept the weekend rolling on Saturday afternoon. Playing in its old Woodward Gym for the second time in two days, Fort Valley State enjoyed the smaller setting for a second time and raced past Kentucky State, 3-0, and completed a perfect pair of Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matches.
FVSU (6-4/2-0 SIAC) quickly took the afternoon lead with the match's opening seven points behind kills from each of Isaiah Fedd, Jaxon Hicks and a pair Chey Cooper winners to go with a Jose Gallardo service ace. The Wildcats pushed further to a double-digit lead, 13-3, and eventual 19-5 margin until a going-away 25-10 first set final.
In set number two, FVSU went to a 5-2 lead and eventually took a 6-1 spurt for a 24-13 advantage. As was the case in the final point of the first set, Fedd pounded down the final tally for a 25-16 end.
The Thorobreds (2-7/1-1 SIAC) ran off four points in a row for only its third and first lead by more than a point at 9-7. Later tied at 14-14, the Wildcats took final control with eight of the following nine points for a 22-15 edge. FVSU ended the match in a 25-17 final.
Hicks paced the home team with nine kills with one error in 13 swings for a .615 percentage to go with four digs, two aces and a block. Fedd accounted for eight kills, .417 percentage, two aces, two blocks and one dig. Cooper added four winners, five digs, two assists and an ace, while Raheem Thomas chipped in four kills, two blocks and two digs. Gallardo dished out 22 assists, served three aces and dug four attacks. Jamil Scott had four digs.
FVSU has three days off until it hosts St. Francis (Pa.) on Wednesday evening (Mar. 6) in a 6 p.m. match.
