FORT VALLEY, Ga. – The Wildcats take off their cleats happy today. Fort Valley State used multiple runs keyed by Riley Jenkins in both the fourth and sixth innings and completed softball series sweep of Benedict College, 7-2, Sunday afternoon.
After Riley Youngblood singled home Mariah Williams in the home third to tie the game at 2-2, Jenkins gave FVSU (17-12/11-3 SIAC East) the lead for good. The catcher sent a shot to left field to plate Avery Thomas, who led off the fourth by walking, and pinch runner Selena Linsenbach scored for her off a Williams infield single for the 4-2 advantage. Jenkins led off the sixth with a triple to left and began a 3-run at bat, before Rachel Clark kept the Lady Tigers (8-20/5-10 SIAC East) off the scoreboard for the sixth inning in a row to end the day.
Jenkins finished the Sunday afternoon matinee a perfect 3 for 3 with an RBI single and a triple with a run scored. Williams also had three hits in a 3 for 4 day with three runs, two RBI and a stolen base. Youngblood added a run-scoring single, Chasity Kates one hit and a pinch hit from Taylor Orr.
For the third-straight appearance, Clark (8-6) did not give up an earned run. She went the distance of the seven innings, scattered seven hits and struck out three without a walk.
Following a pair of home errors led to two Benedict scores in the top of the first, Williams started the runs for FVSU. The shortstop laid down a lead-off bunt, which was misplayed for an error, went to second on a passed ball, third on a Leah Leonard fly out and touched home on Youngblood's ground out to make it 2-1.
In the bottom of the third, Williams singled to left with one out. Leonard sacrificed her to second and Youngblood drove her in on a single to center for a 2-2 tie.
FVSU will travel to the east coast of Georgia on Thursday (March 28) for the next SIAC 3-game series at Savannah State. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. of the doubleheader.
