SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Wildcats kept the offensive attack rolling in a Friday afternoon contest. Fort Valley State jumped on host Savannah State with five runs in the first, scored in every at bats and completed the series sweep, 13-0 in five innings, for its 20th season victory.
FVSU put its first six hitters to reach base and received RBI singles from Alexia Scott and Ashtyn Perkins along with a Laila Leverett sac fly for a 5-0 lead. Leading 6-0 heading to the third frame, Mariah Williams slashed a two-run single before Perkins added a 2-run double in the fourth to make it an 11-0 advantage. Scott slammed a two-run home run to center in the fifth and Taylor Watson finished the Tigers off without a hit in home side.
With the victory, the Wildcats earned their first 20-win season in 13 campaigns. FVSU improved to 20-12 on the season and stay atop the SIAC East at 14-3.
Scott paced the Wildcat Friday hitters with a 3 for 4 outing with two runs, a 2-run home run and three RBI. Perkins and Avery Thomas each added two hits apiece. Perkins doubled and singled with a run and three RBI, while Thomas scored once and drove in one. Williams singled in two with a run and two stolen bases, Leverett singled, scored twice and drove in two and Jennifer Ramirez singled and touched home two times. Leah Leonard walked two times, scored twice and had one RBI.
The three FVSU pitchers – Rachel Clark, Taylor Orr and Watson – split the five innings of work where they gave up only a one-out single in the first and a two-out double in the fourth and struck out two.
FVSU has the weekend off before it hosts Wesleyan College next Wednesday, April 3, in a 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. doubleheader.
